An Open Letter to John Gray:

August 15, 2002

Dear Mr. Gray,

You sell far more books than I do, and your name is much better known than my own. My invitation therefore may seem rather self-serving. Nonetheless, here goes.

To my mind, your views on gender are wrongheaded, outmoded, reductive and dangerous. Your “Mars/Venus” outlook reinforces obsolete stereotypes and coerces men and women alike into narrow and restrictive ways of defining themselves and one another.

I believe that my novel, Unplugged, represents and articulates a far more accurate and constructive point of view.

Mr. Gray, I will publicly debate you on the topic of gender at the time and place of your choice. Please contact me at POB 622, Evanston, IL 60204-0622 to make arrangements.

Sincerely,

Paul McComas
